Over the Summer holidays, I took part in two summer schools. The first one was a summer school in oceanography and marine biology at Southampton University, which I applied to through the Headstart Trust. I had sample lectures, lab sessions and a day at sea on the RV Callista (The University’s research vessel) conducting experiments to collect data on the physical oceanography of Southampton Solent. The whole experience gave me an insight into what every aspect of Uni life would be like, from the Halls of Residence to the education.
I was also selected to take part in a Sutton Trust summer school at Cambridge University for Geography. Although we didn’t go to sea for our research project, it was still just as interesting and I learnt a lot about current global topics of geographical interest. I had lectures from Doctors who are experts in their fields and it was truly amazing.
From both of the summer schools, I have made some great friends from all over the country and I now feel much more confident about applying to University. I would encourage all students thinking about applying for a summer school to go for it, I learnt so much and it was a really positive experience.
