Spectroscopy in a suitcase

On Monday the 6th of February, former Fakenham College student James Woods and a team of Infrared Spectroscopy experts visited the college to give an insight into life as a chemistry student at university. They began talking us through some of the theory behind infrared spectroscopy and the IR spectrometer; which is really just fancy terminology for a machine that detects infrared radiation absorption to identify functional groups. Later in the session we were even fortunate enough to be unleashed on the IR spectrometer to test samples of our choice. We were also set a range of challenges throughout the session using the experimental data we had been given in order to test our knowledge. Hopefully they will be back again next year!
