Y11 Students visit Bill Cleyndert & Company

Bill Cleyndert & Company is a leading British manufacturer of exquisite bespoke furniture, cabinetry and specialist joinery - and they are very local! Recently, during a Product Design lesson, Mandi Cleyndert and one of their apprentices, Henry, came in to school to talk to Year 11 students about their business, including the research and product development they undertake. They also brought in lots of samples of finishes and products the Company had developed and produced. It was an inspiring opportunity and gave the students a much clearer perspective of the opportunities in ‘product design’ in the real world.

Following on from this, the company invited a small group of interested students to their premises on Tattersett Business Park, to see for themselves the business and their operations at closer quarters. The visit took place after school on Monday 6th March and was really insightful. The students were taken in small groups, and accompanied by current employees, around the premises and shown each stage from initial client meetings, through to designing and drawing and all the way through production to the 'Finishing Rooms'. It was fascinating and the work truly exquisite.

The students also said how inspirational the visit was in preparation for their GCSE exam. Mandi also talked to the students in some detail about the skills and qualities employers are looking for when taking on young people as an apprentice. She also went through the very thorough application and recruitment process. Information such as this helps create an understanding for our students of what will be expected of them in the future, irrespective of the career path they eventually follow. We obviously created a good impression of ourselves as we have been invited to take a group of Year 10 students on another visit towards the end of March! With many thanks to Mandi and all at Bill Cleyndert & Company for the support and interest shown in our students progress into the world of work (and the yummy biscuits!).
