Dear parent / carer,
My best wishes to all of you at the start of Autumn. Welcome to our second newsletter of the year which has a number of stories letting you know about what is going on here at The Academy. If you ever need to contact the Academy the form tutor is the first point of contact.
Year 11 students half-term exams
Over the October half-term holiday we had 28 year 11 students who gave up much of their break to come back into school to take a course and an exam - real dedication! The examination is the European Computer Driving Licence which has nothing to do with driving but lots to do with computing. It is a GCSE equivalent qualification based around Microsoft products such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint. 25 of the 28 passed with Merit, Distinction or Distinction* grades and the remaining 3 students are re-taking over the next couple of weeks. Many congratulations to the students for being extra-committed in the holidays. The qualification is open to all year 11 students and many are coming in during February half-term and in July once the final examinations have finished. If any student or parent wants to know more then please do contact me personally.
New staff at Fakenham Academy
There are a number of new staff who started this September and over the course of the next couple of months they are gradually finding their feet and becoming part of our family. I have asked them to write up a little bit of information about themselves by way of an introduction and you will find these pieces in this newsletter and on the website. I would like to extend a warm welcome to them all and hope they enjoy working here and supporting students to do their very, very best.
Friends of Fakenham Academy
My continued thanks to the Friends of Fakenham Academy who support the Academy so well. As well as arranging quizzes, car boot sales and bingo nights they continue to run the North Norfolk Christmas Market which is on Saturday 5th November from 10am to 3pm. The money raised by The Friends has helped us purchase so many things in the last couple of years. Examples are: New curtains in the Main Hall, new chairs also, Science GO balls to measure gravity, a variety of catering and cooking implements, posters for psychology, music stands, PE equipment etc etc
I would like to thank all the parents, students and Mrs Boyle who managed between them to get over 100 filled shoe boxes for charity [Blythswood Care]. This was a tremendous effort and some individual students brought in a number of filled boxes on their own [ie - they filled them personally]. What a heart-warming gesture from them! You may have seen the story in the local press and also on our website.
PE clubs go “crazy”
PE here has always been a very popular subject. I speak with many ex-students who remember the days of Mr Stringer and Mr Bishop and also the rugby support given by Mr Muston. Some parents may not recognise these names but a good number will. Our current PE department, led superbly by Vicky Dewson, runs clubs in a whole range of subjects and in recent weeks according to the department it has “gone crazy” with participation. Week in and week out we have over 300 students taking part in sports that are NOT part of the normal lessons. This is FANtastic and the benefits in terms of long-term health and happiness cannot be underestimated. When I was at school in the ‘70s and ‘80s [1970s and 1980s for clarification…] I gained a huge amount from cross-country and I have taken this into my later years and still run regularly. I hope that many of our students continue to see the benefits of participation and competition in sport. Well done to all of you!
