The U14 Fakenham Academy cricket team had their first match of the season against Reepham on Monday 24th June. After some poor weather forcing matches to be rearranged, it was nice to get a game played.
Fakenham chose to bat first and put in a confident display against the Reepham bowlers, who also had a Fakenham student in their ranks to bolster their numbers - my thanks to Fyn Walden for making a mature decision to make the game more competitive. Alex Lockhart was in no mood to play defensive shots and started slogging the ball for several 4’s very early on. His consistency and aggressive running continued to frustrate the bowlers who despite bowling well and taking some wickets, could not dislodge Lockhart.
Lockhart was well supported by several teammates who came in and scored important runs to take the total after 15 overs to an impressive 102/4, with Lockhart achieving a half century in the process.
Fakenham began bowling with good intent and despite giving away a few 4’s and numerous wides, were able to dismiss the opening batters for Reepham fairly quickly. Additional players came in and scored some vital runs for Reepham who were chasing a high score, but due to some accurate bowling from Lockhart, Ben Abram, Kyle Roberts and Toby Pollicott-Reed and some fine catches from Barnaby Heazel, they were eventually all out for 64.
A fine start to the season and hopefully future matches will go similarly. Well done boys and girls!
